A brief explanation of some of the best known competitive formats

CALLOWAY

A tournament where a formula sets your handicap /score for that day.

This scoring system is used primarily for tournaments where there are a number of relatively inexperienced players involved. In such a tournament, many players may not have an established handicap so the format attempts to create a fair handicapping system.

We won’t explain all the details here, but for your enlightenment, you only need to understand that a number of your worst holes are deducted or adjusted from the first 16 holes played.

For example, if you have a score in the 70’s, you may deduct or adjust off one of your worst holes. If you score over 100, you may end up deducting or adjusting off your worst 4 holes. There are tables and calculations used to determine exactly how this works. You can find more information on the Internet on how to use this scoring system.
