THE PRESS
Increasing the value of the bet during the round
A press is a “new” bet made during a match in addition to the original bet by the player or team that is losing. The press bet is most common in a Nassau match, but can be used in any betting game with a little creativity.
A “press” means the original bet is doubled for the number of holes remaining from where the press was declared. This usually occurs when a player who is losing starts another bet hoping to offset the one he or she has already lost. Rules for calling a press should be agreed upon before the match begins.
It is common practice to declare an “automatic press” bet when a player or team is two down. The player or team that is ahead has the option of declining to accept the press, but it is customary to accept it. It is best practice to start a new line on the scorecard to record the press bet.
A different way to handle a Press is to concede the original bet when it appears the contest is decided, and then the Press represents a new bet for the same $ or more, played over the remaining holes.
