Tournament of Champions (1969-1998), WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship (1999-2006)
About the Course
From 1969 to 1998, this course hosted the Tournament of Champions for 30 consecutive years and welcomed the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship six times, witnessing legendary moments from Nicklaus, Gary Player, Trevino, Tom Watson, Mickelson, and Woods. With 37 PGA Tour events in its history, La Costa became an integral part of Southern California golf heritage, and since 2024, it serves as the permanent home of the NCAA Division I Golf Championships. The back nine delivers pure drama, with water threatening eight of the ten holes from the 8th through 18th. The par-3 16th demands a full carry over water, with shaved slopes around the green sending short misses tumbling down—a tribute to Augusta National's iconic 12th. The par-4 15th, tempting at just 317 yards, lures players into aggressive tee shots, but a hidden lake behind the green and towering bunkers punish the bold. This is why La Costa has tested the world's finest golfers for half a century.
