About the Course
Host of two U.S. Open Championships, Torrey Pines South Course holds the rare distinction of being only the second municipal course ever to stage America's national championship. In 2008, the course witnessed one of golf's most legendary moments when Tiger Woods triumphed while playing with a stress fracture and torn ACL, prevailing in a dramatic playoff against Rocco Mediate. Jon Rahm claimed victory here again in 2021. Since the late 1960s, the South Course has hosted the final rounds of the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open, where Woods captured four consecutive titles (2005-2008) and set the course record of 62 in 1999. Stretching along coastal bluffs north of San Diego with breathtaking Pacific views, the course can extend to 7,800 yards, with par 4s averaging nearly 460 yards. The signature downhill par-3 3rd plays around 200 yards, where swirling ocean winds turn club selection into a mental chess match—ranging from a 9-iron to a hybrid. The par-5 18th, with its pond fronting the green, became immortalized when Woods drained a clutch 12-foot birdie putt in the final round of the 2008 U.S. Open, sending the gallery into thunderous roars. Thick rough, firm greens, and relentless Pacific winds ensure every round delivers both exhilaration and humility.
